Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory encourages its scientists and engineers to participate fully in the international scientific enterprise through publication and collaboration. Of approximately 1000 peer reviewed journal articles published annually include an LLNL principal author or co-author. Approximately half of our external publications are based upon collaborations with academic collaborators. One quarter include both a LLNL author and an academic collaborator with the University of California.

Much of the Laboratory’s collaborative work involves informal peer-to-peer interaction between scientists and staff at LLNL and an academic collaboratory, with no official exchange of funding or of personnel. In other cases, collaborators seek external funding in support of their collaboration. LLNL has a few internal initiatives designed to support PI-to-PI collaborative activities, and intended to seed long-term, productive interactions. Links to specific programs can be found on this page (UCRP minigrants). In other cases, academic collaborators may be funded to assist in the execution of the Laboratory’s programmatic responsibilities. The University of California has programs that fund collaborations and personnel exchanges between its Laboratories and its campuses. Additionally, the National Nuclear Security Administration has programs geared to enabling academic participation in the Stockpile Stewardship Program, like the Advanced Simulation and Computing program.
